Alexandre Bernardino (PhD 2004) is a tenured Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, Univ. Lisboa, and senior researcher at the Institute for Systems and Robotics in Lisbon. Over the years, he has published around 300 papers in robotics, computer vision, machine learning and cognitive systems, with more than 10,000 citations (GScholar h-index 48). He has supervised 22 PhDs and coordinated several research projects in Portugal and abroad. He is the deputy director of the Computer and Robot Vision Lab at ISR, and coordinator of the thematic line INTERACTION at LARSyS, the national Laboratory for Robotics and Engineering Systems. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and former chair of the IEEE Portugal Robotics and Automation Chapter during. He is a member of ELLIS, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems. His work focuses on giving robots the ability to see, learn and interact, with applications ranging from healthcare and autonomous vehicles to human-robot collaboration. He also explores how robots can be used as scientific models to better understand cognitive and natural systems.
